This work is a glimpse to
new applications for emerging technologies.
The synthesis includes three
key components: Ink in Motion (e-ink), high speed wireless internet
access802.11a and hybrid
membrane. The various parts are fused together resembling a texture
similar to construction debris
netting attached to building scaffolding.
In this case the enhanced
or padded netting becomes an intelligent skin with interactive
programming.
The proposed assembly presented
to Creative TIme, for Anchorage 2002 Exhibition (Brooklyn, NY).
This concept evolved soon
after 9/11 and it represents a futurist system:
WOTS2008 , interactive
programmable matrix, available free for public content and rented
space for advertising and
institutional data. The nature of the technology as in many systems allow
for unsolicited
opportunity for postings,
and for this simulation, those outside the due process are described
as
Freewalkers. This aspect
of the program does not condone deviant behavior but rather addresses the
possibility in a real world
scenario, where system "error" may occur.
The simulated program gives
participants a search for available WOTS> lat/long coordinates, or
general available WOTS space.
Each participant is allocated one space and one time slot at each login
- however - it is on a first
come first serve basis, so a participant can keep entering and fill an
entire
site if no one else is knocking
them off the space. As a standard the space provided includes: two
lines of text not to exceed
32 characters and a menu icons. The participants can create their own
icons and add them to the
menu for sharing. This is a communication delivery in physical and virtual
space-adaptable to various
conditions and substrates. The design of the matrix is modular, scalable,
portable , reusable, basically
a composite membrane with permanent and disposable parts. As an
architectural interactive
illuminating surface, the design options are endless. For this site specific
installation, the material
synthesis is used as an illuminating membrane surrounding a scaffolding
configuration similar to
a public sidewalk passage- spanning approximately two city blocks in length.
The general specifications
include metal scaffolding, debris netting, battery units, eink panels and
web
interface. The industrial
parts may appear somewhat crude in this prototype, however the interactive
components give the audience
a near true experience of a future moment.
Individual participants can
upload content directly at physical WOTS via portable
devices and remotely via
wordonthesite : WOTS available> lat./long. coordinates through a network
of
internet portals. This 3D
illustration suggest a new breed of public content delivery, and a new
urban
illuminating texture, physically
and metaphorically. It is primarily a system designed for text and
image icons- a modular digital
bulletin board - in mammoth scale.
The innovation of the project
is not limited to the technological synthesis, but also to the proposed
economic model , which is
based on an egalitarian system of content dissemination, a current global
topic. The work as an experiment
hopes to further demonstrate freedom for individual participation
within previously limited
resources can only improve the effectiveness of that resource and create
a
more advanced version of
the original.
Ultimately this work will
be a tapestry of contributions that illuminate-a new communication forum
-and a new physical texture
in the urbanscape.
Natasha Makowski
creates visual experiments by applying emerging technologies with
industrial
materials in new constructs and considerations. The goal is to find benefit
from new
compositions,
and to create hybrids with function multiplicity. Soothing effects, tactile
appeal, and
streamline
aesthetic are all part of the design vision, however, the prevailing goal
is to use design
methods that
parcel advanced technologies and precious materials to the public arena
in affordable
and easy to
use morsels, inspired by ideals in 'Connectivism".
